BREACH OF THE DEFENCE ACT
WANGANUI CHEMIST FINED. (By Telegraph — i'ress Association.) WAJNGANUI, Monday. The magistrate to-day hoard a case in which Mr Arthur Winstone, chemist, was charged under tho Defence Act with preventing an) employee from attending he casual camp. It was shewn that Winatoiie had only one assistant. At the time of the camp he was unable to get relieving assistance, and as tho business demanded the attention of two he declined to give permission for his assistant to go. Winstono was not antagonistic to military training, and on other occasions had given all assistance to his employee, go that he could attend parados. In .summing up, his Worship said that he must hold that a breach of tho Act had been committed, and that defendant was liable to a fine. There was no doubt that the Territorials movement entailed a certain amount of hardship on employers. At the same timo the requirements of the country were paramount. Employers could apply to tho magistrate for exemption if there was any undue hardship. A fine of £1 and costs was imposed. j
