THE EAST COAST RAILWAY.
The Masterton Chamber of .Commerce is to be commended for pressing the claims of the East Coast railway and 'the Rimutaka ' deviation upon the Minister of Public Works. The Wellington Chamber, thanks to the vitality of the press, has awakened to the importance of bringing the backiblocks into closer touch with the distributing centre, and it has promised to co-operate with the country districts in any movement to bring about speedy results. The Masterton Chamber, which has been hammering away at these projects for years past, is inking the lead in a march upon the capital city by a representative depu--1 ation. Such a deputation would stir Parliament to action, and would show that the country districts are in earnest in the matter. The Minister has promised to go over the district again with the Engineer-int-Chief in the recess. That is not considered sufficient- An expert committee should be set up at once to prospect the country for the best available route along the East Coast, and for the
most practicable route for the deviation of the Itimui*lka. In view of the immense interests involved, the two projects must be taken together.
