THE COMPETITIONS.
The Masterton Competitions, which have now- come to be recognised as an annual, festival, open on Monday next!' The entries received are very satisfactory, and there are likely to be a considerable number of visitors to the town next week. From the point of view of .business alone, these competitions are worthy of encouragement and support. From the more important consideration of improving the musical and elocutioW' duoation of the people, the festival has a distinct claim upon the community. .We know of no institution that produces better and more lasting resuite than these competitive gatherings. On the present occasion there will be a new judge |jnd many new competitors, so that fresh opportunities will present) themselves to those who are enorgetic and ambitious. We feel sure that the festival of next week will'be accorded the enthusiasiastic support of the public, and that the results will be for the improvement of the community as a whole.
