WAIRARAPA v. HAWKE'S BAY. < WIN FOII WAIRARAPA BY I .NARROW MARGIN. 1 1 Tho representative football 'natch between Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay was played on tho old show grounds at Masterton yesterday afternoon in ideal weather. The ground was in excellent order, and tho game was witnessed by a bout a thousand spec- 1 tutors. The match was evenly eontested, Hawke's Bay having the advantage in the first spell, and Wairarapa in the second. The scores for both sides .should have been larger than were recorded. 'lho Rev. B. Ashcroft acted as referee, and gave very geneial -satisfaction. The teams were composed as follows Hawko's Bay: Barry, McIntyre, Howard, Curtayne, O'Neill, Ait Ken, Ormond, Somersall, McNamara, Stewart, I' 1 . Holder, McKeown, Downing, Johnston, Smyrk. Wairarapa :-Goldor, Ross, Desmond, C. Welch, H. McKenzie, Brough, D. Ross, Clarke, F. Ball, Grouble (2), Tait, Mat-son, Darville, G. Ross. Hawke's Bay won the toss, and Wairarapa was sot the task of playing with a brilliant sun in their face. Soon after the ball had been set in motion, Hawke's Bay made a brillian. passing rush, and carried the play to their opponent's, 25, where a scrum took place in front of the Wairarapa goal, and F. Holder snapped up the leather and dropped a fine goal, amidst loud cheering. Hawke's: Bay 4, Wairarapa 0. Spurred on by their early achievement, the blacks assumed the aggressive, and had the greens frequently in trouble. MoNainara very nearly got over on one occasion, but was cleverly grassed by Tait. Play was then taken to the ■ centre of the field, and McKenzie made an unsuccessful kick at goai from a mark by Ball. . The greens made a temporary rally, but through faulty .handling of the ba{l and ofl side play, they were soon on the defensive again. Curtayne very nearly placed a goal for Hawke's Bay from a penalty kick. A series of serums took place in Wairarapa territory, and Johnston had a shot at goal from a penalty kick, but failed. Hawke's Bay made another good passing rash, but Tait relieved the situation by kicking into touch. Wairarapa then livened up, and carried the leather into the blacks' twenty-five, but a penalty kick was given, and play wa transferred to the centre of the field. Line play followed, and Hawke's Bay was awarded; a penalty kick in front of the Wairarapa goal. Johnston took the kick, but the ball fell sh»rt. The greens made a vigorous passing rush, but Johnston saved the situation by marking. For the remainder of tho spell, play was chiefly in Wairarapa territory, but Hawke's Bay failed to increase the scor®
At the opening of the second spell, I play was confined to the centre of the field:. The Wairarapa forwards then carried the leather into the blacks' twenty-five, where a of scrums took place. Q. Welch took a rather, easy pot in front of the Hawke's Bay goal, but missed. Line play followed, and the greens again assumed the aggressive. Two successive rushes were made, and scores were only averted by the judicious kicking of Smyrk and Johnston. Play was then taken to the centre', and a penalty kick was a . aided Hawke's Bay in the Wairarapa twenty-five. Ourtayne failed with the kick. The green forwards then made a series of forward rushes, and were once or twice within an ace of scoring. At length, from an open scrum, the leather was passed out to C. Groube, who made a dodgy run and secured a try for Wairarapa, .-midst great enthusiasm. | The remainder of the speU was slight- i ly in favour of Wairax-apa, though | Hawke's Bay made one or two determined rushes, and were awarded a penalty kick in a rather awkward position. The score, ihowever, was not altered, and the whistle went with play in Hawke's Bay territory. From a spectacular point of view, the game was not what might be | termed first-class. The forward di- i visions were about evenly matched, though Wairarapa appeared to have the better staying power. Both sides were frequently penalised for infringements of the rules. The kick- j ing and tackling of the Hawke's Bay ■ backs was superior to that of tliei opponents, but they were not so successful in the open rushes. The Wairarapa backs fumbled the 'ball a good deal throughout the game>, and their 1 passing was erratio. For Hawke',s Bay, the most prominent players were probably Johnston, Simyrk, Holder and MoNamara, and for Wairarapa, McKenzie, Ros s and C, Groube. JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. A North v.
