LAND BALLOT AT PAHIATUA. (By Telegraph—Ptesa Assoeiatkm^Y PAHIATUA, Last Nigßt. Pahiatua is at present crowded with land-seekers, no less than 37® applicants having entered for tli» Mangatainoka land ballot. The applicants are drawn from all* parts of the Dominion, comprising young'men: j and old" men, and young women who have babies in their arms., The block (which- is situated in a fork of tl'iei ;Manawatu- and Mangahao rivers, ad» ' jacent to the railway)., comprises 161® .acres-of good class dairying land, and Has been cut up into 22 sections, i ranging from 48 to 138' acres. A : large number of "the" applicants hava entered' for several sections, some of {them being* in for; as many as ten, iand' it is estimated that the total i nutnber 'of' applications therefore musfc 'run into over four figures. The Land j Board .commenced' the examination of applicants this morning, and continued right throughout the day, rejecting all' those who were not landless ■and did' not comply with the conditions. The examinations are still proceeding, and it is hoped to conclude to-night, but this is doubtful. The ballot, which was set down for ; to-day, is consequently postponed until; to-morrow.
