THE GREY ELECTION.

The election to fill the extraordinary vacancy in the House of Representatives oafused by the regrettable death of Sir Arthur Guinness takes place torday. The campaign ha s been vigorous throughout, and each of the three candidates is considered to have a chance. From reliable accounts that have come to hand, it seems a foregone conclusion that there will :>e a becond ballot. The final result will largely depend upon who reaches that ballot. If the -ultimate selection rests between Messrs Haainan and Michel, the former will probably win, ag the Labour vote will be almost certain to go with .him. Should Messrs Michel and Webb be in the final ballot, the former may win. On the other hand, if Messrs Hannan and Webb are left in, the latter wilprobably be successful. The issue is as mixed as. it possibly could be. Unfortunately tlhe election is nor. being conducted ,on straight-out ; political lines. The question of pface, of residue has a considerable bearing upon the result, and the religious element has, unhappily, also been introduced. If Mr Hannan should be raturnod, the Government will not suffer a "serious reverse, and the Opposition ranks will be no stronger than before, while if either Mi Michel or Mr Webh <ue elected the balance, of power will not be materially affected.
