Their Majesties toured the pitmen's towns of Newton k> pillows, Ashton-under-Tyne, Abram, Hindley, •and Wigan. The landscape consisted chiefly of colliery shafts. The greeting of the King and Queen was enthusiastic. The pit-brow lassies are living in the streets. They disappointed the Royal visitors by wearing their beet clothes.
