MAN BURNED TO DEATH.

Ernest Edward Cooke, aged 35, a baker, residing at Northcote, was burned, to death last night in a fire which destroyed his residence and furniture. Jt is supposed that the fire was caused by the upsetting of a lamp which Cooke was using to prepare gruel. At 11.30 p.m. his wife discovered the kitchen in flames and Cooke in a oollapsed state, his clothing ablaze. A neighbour named Fitzpatrick made a gallant attempt to rescue Oooke. but was beaten back by smoke an£ flames. Cook's incinerated remains were found this morning in the debris. Tiherhouse wa»-insured for £175 ii the Alliance. The furniture was not insured.
