DETERMINLD SUICIDE.
(By Telegraph—Fress Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. A case 6f determined suicide was reported to tlw police to-day from the monumental works at the coiner of Hereford and Madras streets. In response to a telephone message a, constable w'ent 'to the yfhrd, iand found the body of a man in, a sitting position, with his head thrown slightly back, and his throat cut from ear to ear. A blood-stained razor was lying alongside. From letters found on the body, deceased was identified as Joseph Smart, The lettors indicated that deceased evidently contemplated suicide. Smart had seated himself on a flat, dressed stone, with hiy back against a large block of stone, before cutting his throat. No money was found on the body. Smart was an elderly man, about 60 years of age. He was well-known in Lyttelton, where he was employed by the Railway Department as a casual labourer on the wharves. At the inquest, a verdict was returned that deceased committed sjuicide by cutting his throat with a razor while temporarily of unsound mind.
