v - v An attractive programme has-been prepared for the concert to be held in the Congregational Church in Masterton this evening. A large number of new members will be elected at the next meeting of the Pahiatua-Akitio Agricultural ;md Pastoral Association. There.was a distinct hardening in prices at the Masterton Btock sales yesterday, the demand for both fat sheep and stores being keen. The annual dinner .and distribution of prizes in connection with the Opaki Rifle Club will take place iu the Arcadia tea-rooms at Masterton this evening. Miss M. E. Richmond has withdrawn her nomination for a seat on the Wellington Education Board, and Mr Robert Lee has, in consequence, been re-elected. Mangatainoka block, which is going to* be put up to the ballot this month, is said to be equal to rich dairying flatg at Konini, which are realising ova- £4O per acre. The schools at Featherston, Greytown and Carterton will be closed today, to enable the children to be present at "the Buchanan Reception. The Masterton schools will not be closed. At a meeting of 4 the Pongarba Medical Guarantors it was decided to disband the association and form a new one. For this a fee of £5 was fixed, which will, include "three concultations and mileage up to 12 miles. The services of the'Pahiatua Rifle Defence Club have been accepted by the Government. The club was formed three months ago by Captain Clifton, and has at present >a membership of over forty. The Waihakeke school has been closed, in consequence of a case of I scarlet fever having occurred among 1 the children. Since the Buchanan Home was opened there have been admitted 16 patients, of whom nine have died and two have left relieved. This leave* five now in the Home. A lad named Charles Zabell had the. misfortune to fracture one of bia legs while playing football at the Carterton school on Monday last.. The lad was removed to his home., where Dr Gunn set the limb. Mr Kdwin James Le Grove, a wellknown typewriter expert of Wellington, shot himself through the head with a revolver yesterday afternoon. He had been suffering from nervous prostration. A young man named Robert Wilson waa sentenced to a month's hard labour by Pahiatua Justices yesterday, for assaulting a female child. He pleaded that lie was under the influence of liquor,* and did not remember what had happened. - ' The Beebe Vaudeville Company drew another large audience in the Masterton Town Hall - and every ite mwa's loudly applauded. At the request of nunierous residentsthe Company has decided to show for a third night in Masterton.
