Taylor, who for the last nineteen years has carried on his profession as, an engineer m Prince street. Born in Gloucester, . England, in 1838, Mr Taylor came to Lyttelton in the early sixties, and shortly afterwards joinod in the gold rush to Otago. In 1864 he «settled in Kaiapoi, and after some years in that town; during which ho had the misfortune to be burnt out, he moved to Ohoko, North Canterbury. In 1894 he, with his family, went to Hawera, and has been a resident there ever since.

It is with great regret that we (Carterton News) record the death or the wife of Mr H. Oates, of Gladstone, which occurred on Sunday after, a brief illness. Mrs Oates drove to Masterton on Thursday, and then appeared in her usual health. On returnine home she complained of feeling ill, and on Sunday evening she died. She had been ailing for some little time, but her decease after so brief an illness, came as a very grievious shock to her family. The late Mrs Oates was an amiable and gentle lady, whose friends will deeply mourn her death. Those she leaves in enef, fier husband and voung family of four children, will have the heartfelt sympathy of all the settlers of the district. The funeral will take place today, leavinc the homestead, Gladstone, at 12 o'clock, for the private cemetery of the Oates family m White's' Line. Within the past two vears five members of the family have been laid to rest in that enclosure.
