FIRES AT GISBORNE.

(By Telegraph'—-Tress Association.) GJSBORNIB, Monday. There has been an epidemic of fires during the week-end, no less than five being reported in the district since Saturday. On Sunday a small house at Ma tn where, occupied by Mr Mathieson, w;i s destroyed, and at Pafcutuhi Charles MeGannigan's house was burned to the ground. Later, ai Oiu:oiui, a cottage occupied l>y Mr AY. H. Jones eiught fire, and a bedroom was burned. This afternoon a house, in .Lytton Road, occupied Hv Thomas Bartlett, was destroyed. All tJiese minor fires were eclipsed this evening by. an outbreak at the g\« works, when, as the result of a hitv-h.in the system between the retorts and the refiner, a huge jet of gas ignited, and set, fire to a sfttrroumliug building. The engine house and engine boiler were badly damaged, and the men's change room amd bath room were destroyed, together with the men's clothing what effects ihoy had i:i their ,;"ckets. on the gas works are snren-d over a number of offices, a"nd are not available to-night. Though the damage was pretty severs, the. efficiency of the i\e !

not impaired, and the production of g:is wil'i go on as usual. During the fire one of the gas company's employees, named J. Beattie, was somewhat severely burned.
