The secretary of the Masterton Competitions Society has been officially notified that His Excellency the Governor will be unable to be present •at. the Society's annual carnival. Mrs and Mrs A.-J. Hathaway have returned to Masterton after ah enjoyable holiday * spent'in. the Nelson district. Mr and Mrs Norman Beetham left Masterton yesterday on a visit to Australia. Mr Francis C. Tumor, Mayor of Eketahuna, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. ___ Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., whS" was attending the funeral of his cousin (the late Mr Prentice); at' Waipukurau on Sunday, returned to Masterton yesterday afternoon. He leaves for Wellington to-day. j Mr A. W. Hogg left Masterton for i Wellington yesterday, to attend the I Labour conference. Mr Joseph Young, one of the pioneers of Ellesmere, Canterbury, has died at the age of 91. He was a participant in the Gabriel's Gully and Skipper's Gully rushes in the early days. A Wellington Press- Association message states that Mr J. Lomas, Secretary for Labour, will retire from the Public Bervice on March 31st next. Mr John Evans, Acting-Chief Clerk in the Police Department, will aleo retire at the end of the -year in conformity with the decision of the Public Service Commissioner. Mr E. O. Turner, who has been in the Wairarapa for thirty years in the Blfcnk of Zealand, and'latterly eleven years, in Greytowm., leaves for Wellington to-morrow,, -where he will occupy a position in the Bank of New Zealand Head Office. : He has been for the past month on leave, and that period haa' Auckland, Rotoru's; and Paltoerston North. The death is announced/in Sydney of Mr William Burton, for many years manager of the old Colonial Bank, and later manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Dunedin. Subsequently Mr Burton lived at Fiji, where he was made, a Legislative Uotincillor, eventually removing to Sydney. The decease gentleman was 65 years of age. News frow comes from Queensland that one member of the family, Jacob Wirth, aged 50, did not live long to enjoy his portion. His death ■ took place at Charters Towers on the 16th nit. Deceased was a well-known resident of the town, and was a miner, •Mr D, B. Carrick, auctioneer and in charge of DftlgetyOand Go 's wo« 1 nmd stock department, Wellington has been transferred to take charge of the firm's Marterton branch. Hp was a cadet in the New Zealand and Australian Land Company for some years, serving on their stations in the South Island, and wan afterwards managing stations at Akitio, Table Lands, and' Flat Point in the Wairarapa district .before joining Dalgety and Co. In order to mark his popularity, th? wool and Bkin buyers at last week's Wellington sale, presented Mr Carrick with a handsome box of pines. The presentation was made by Mr Christpsom. Mayor of Patea, a buyer attending the sales.
