A petition has been forwarded to the Carterton Borough Council by a number of tradesmen of the town, who have received notice to 1-emovv certain sign boards as they do not give a nine-foot clearance fr°i\the footpath. As the sign hoards have been in existence for a number of years, and have not proved a nuisance to anyone, the a /_ asking that they bo allowed to main as they are until such time arrives for them to be renewed, an that the by-law be at Present on y applied to new sign boards that may be erected from now on. The de mand opens a very wide queetion. aa the by-law not only applies to sig boards, but includes verandah and verandahs. The majority of the lamps in the town do not give a 9-ft clearance: nor do some of the veran dahs.
