SLY-GROGGING.
No-lioeas* boa now been in,operation in Mastertoa for a period of about four years. Whoa the hotels were first dosed, it was stated that the evil of sly-grogging that sprang up would be stamped out ia the course of time. The police har« exercised the utmost vigilance, and have brought case after ease before the Court, Fines and imprisonment have besrc imposed; but all the prosecutions, asd all the penalties do not appear to have minimised the evil in tie 1 foasfc. On the contrary, there is rea&os t» think that sly-grogging is practised' in Masterton to-day with more reckless impunity than «v©r before. T£&# most demoralising and horrifying: aep«ct of the whole business is that boys and youths of r« speotable parentage are engaging in the traffic. The polioe appear powerless to cope with the evil.. Th feot is that whea one sly-grogger is brought to book, a dozen are' to' be found willing. t/b take his pliaee.- The problem i« a serious one as affecting jtHe- morals of tflie rising generation, and- the sooner" an ! effort is made to solve it the betfter it will be fbtr the community.
