YESTERDAY'S MATCHES. The weather conditions yesterday afternoon, although not ideal for outdoor sports, wore favourable the continuation of the Wairarapa Hockey Association's championship competition. At Lansdowno two ! games were decided, P. and I. ® OII ~ iors decisively defeating St. Matthews by six goals to nil, and Excel-S | sior juniors suffering defeat at the hands of Carterton by four goals to nil. The ground was sloppy «md against a. good exhibition of liockoy, but nevertheless flashes of good play were witnessed. 'The results were as follow: — P. and T. 6; ST. MATTHEW'S 0. Tho P. and T. team have seldom shown to better advantage, whether the result of their opponents having a weak team or improved form, it is hard to say. The game was notable for good work by the P. and I. forwards, who played with very good combination, and repeatedly beat such sterling backs as Walker and Dixon. The yellow vanguard were I well fed by their halves, Hanlcy and i Diggins, and in the second spell • particularly made good use of then • opportunities. In the first spell Naylor, Jackson and Miller scored, and in the second spell, Nay lor excelled i himself, scoring three clever goals, , - mainly tho result of nice passing "bouts. The greens rare attacked, j although Dixon and Hatch made several good individual rushes, but,
lacking support, these generally came to nothing. For the greater part ot the second sp-'U the yellows attacked and the greens were kept busy defending. The final scores were: 1 • and T. 6; St. Matthew's 0. Messrs Rosson and Rue were in .charge of the game. FEATHERSTON 3; EXCELSIOR 2. At Featlierston yesterday the local team defeated a weak Excelsior elev- j en by three goals to two. Ihe game i was very even throughout, the first spell ending with neither side having scored. The second spell was fast i and ,opan, and good hockey was wit- ; messed. Featlierston scored first, . Barr equalising for Excelsior. - From ■ a niece piece of play Russell scored i again for Featlusrston. Vile th-on i scored Excelsior's second goal. A > strenuous battle then ensued or > which Excelsior easily had the best, p Goddard scored the winning goal tor Featlierston after which Excelsior - had manv shots at goal which went . wide, and towards tin; end of the . same had everything their own way j although no goals resulted. Mr J. - Fisher controlled the game.
JUNIOR. •On No. 2 Lansdowne Carterton juniors proved too for Excelsior, •who went down to the tune of four goals to nil. The. Carterton lads showed better combination all through and although -the Excelsiors made several good rushes, thiy lacked the finish necessary to turn them to account. , , Mr Gray wag the referee.
