The contest for the Middle-Weight Championship of New Zealand and a purse of 30 sovs, presented by the Bush Boxing Association, was fought out in the Drill Hall, Pahiatua, last night, between Barney Ireland (Waipawa), the holder of the title, and Tom McGrath (late of Sydney) and the newly-appointed instructor to the Bush Boxing Association, Pahiatua. The fight was for the best of fifteen rounds. Up to the thirteenth round McGrath did most of the attacking, but Ireland defended well, and occasionally attacking, secured a slight lead on points. In the fourteenth round Ireland forced matters and soon had McGrath in distress. In the fifteenth round, Ireland, who, was still fairly fresh, went in for punishment, buc his judgment was at fault. The referee, 'Mr T. 0. Farrell, of Wanganui, declared the match a draw, amid cheers and groans. The amateur contests resulted as follow: — Welter.—K. Kelly (Pahiatua) lOst s£lb, beat McFarland (Woodville) lOst 131b. Welter—F. Knapp (Pahiatua) lOst 41b, drew with Downes (Palmerston North) lOst lib. Light-weight.—Robson (Woodville) 9st 711b, beat McDonald (Pahiatua) 9st 81b. .
