A CURIOUS ANOMALY.
CHAIRMANSHIP OF HOSPITAL AND CHARITADLE AJL UCiARD.
SOLICITOR'S OPINION TO KE TAKEN
A curious anomaly in tho Act affecting Hospjtal and Charitable Aid Boards was 'rtn >;aled at the meeting of the "Wairar'jja Board yesterday. It appears that Mr E. G. Eton, tho chairman, had retired from office since the last meeting and had been re-elected. The appointment of chairman was therefore placed on the order paper by tho secretary. Mr W. Fisher stated that, under the Act, the chairman had to hold office for two years. In tihese circumstances he did not think it necessary to move tha re-election of Mr Eton. Mr Eton read tho clause in the Act dealing with the subject. Mr T. V. Moore said he read the Act differently from Mr Fisher. He thought it was incumbent that they should elect a chairman at this meeting. , Mr Eton said the matter was immaterial to him. Ha would, therefore, call for nominations for the position of chairman.
Mr J. C Ewington moved that Mr D. J. Cameron be appointed chairman for the ensuing year. He had nothrag against the present chairman, but he thonght the po>s"rlion shouldVgo round. Mr G. Bennett seconded tho resolution. He had nothing against the chairman, but he thought it desirable that they should have a change. Mr Eton moved as an amendment that Mr W. Fisher be elected chairman. HJ3 dad not think it desirable that the chairman of the central committee should also be chairman of the Board.
Mr Fisher declined nomination, stating that his hands were already very full. He maintained that Mr Eton,, having been elected Hi the chair last year, must continue to be chairman for another year, unless he ■ *■ Mr Ewington contended Giat* as Mr Eton's eeat had become vacant by effluxion of tame, it was necessary that a fresh chairman be elected. .Mr W. Moore thought the matter was one for the Board's solicitor. Mr T. V. Moore moved that Mr Eton be elected chairman for the meeting, and that the opinion of the Board's solocitor be taken on the question of a permanent chairman. After further discussion, the motion of Mr T. Y. Moore was seconded by, Mr Fisher, and carried on the voices* , .
