THE GREY SEAT.
Tho vacancy for the Grey seat, caused bj the regrettable death of Sir Ar- ! thu»' Guinness, will no doubt Ix 3 eagerly contested. .It ia reported that the Labour Federation as well as the LtlKsi-al Party will bring forward a candidate. Although the Government has never been strong on the West Oast, and is at tho disadvantage that it is opposed by both of tho Greyniouth papers, it will probably havo no difficulty in securing a strong candidate for tho seat. There Ls a growing feeling on tho Coast that tho Government should bogiven a i-easonable opportunity of "making good," and it would not bo surprising if, in the second ballot, a Reform candidate were successful. The late Sir Arthur Guinness had recently declared that Ministers were imbued with high ideals, and if this opinion is shared by his constituents, the Government will be well supported, if it does not actually succeed in tho by-election.
