THE CRYSTAL PALACE.
The cables told us a day or two ago that the South London authorities were providing half the money required for the purchase of the Crystal Palace, and that the Lord Mayor was opening a fund from which to find the balance. It may be interesting to know that the late Queen Victoria opened the Crystal Palace on June 10th, 1854. The building had been previously used for the purposes of the Exhibition of 1851, and was surrendered to Messrs Fox and Henderson on December Ist of the same year, the materials being disposed of for the sum of £70,000 to a company, which soon afterwards commenced reerecting the Crystal Palace on its present s ite. The proposed capital of £600,000 in 100,000 shares of £5 oach, was increased in January, 1853, to £1,000,000. In February, 1887, when the company became insolvent, it was stated that the total expenditure exceeded three millions, and receipts four millions, while 50,000,000 visitors had passed through its gates. The Palace, which for many years was used for exhibitions and shows of various kinds, and nmsical and art festivals, ha s of late years proved a heavy burden to those concerned in its fortunes. Quito recently the company went into liquidation, and the Palace is now for sale.
