The engagement is announced by cable of Miss Eileen Ward to MiBernard B. Wood, a New Zealander. Mr F. W. Perry, of Kahrutara, who has been on a visit to the Old Country, is expected to return this week.
Lord and Lady Islington were welcomed'at Bortham, Lord Islington's home in England, by two hundred tenants.
The death occurred at Auckland on Saturday of Mr William Thomas Hildreth, an early settler of Wellington, in his 81st year. Mr John Farrell, representing J. C. Williamson, Ltd., is at present in Masterton making arrangements for bho production of the pantomime "Puss in Boots" in the Town Hall on Monday evening next. Mr B. Mackay, of the Featherston branch of the Bank of New Zealand has been transferred. He will spend a few woeks in Eketahuna before taking up his new appointment.
. The engagement is of Miss Ivy Bon<L to Mr" E. E. Boylandj of the railway offices, Wellington* Mr and Mr s J. Byers, of Carrington, who are leaving on a visit to the Old Country, were- entertained at Carterton yesterday morning, and presented by Mr E. Eagle, jun., on behalf of the settlers of Carrington, with a handsome travelling rug and handbag.
News was received by the last Ehg-. lish mail ofthe deatK at, Feu Terrace; Perth (Scotland) of Mrs Christian Wright Cameron, Widow of the late Mr Alexander Cameron, of Chathick, Gomrie, and mother of Mr W. W. Cameron, of Wrigley Street, Master-' ton. The deceased, who was seventyseven years of .age, leaves four eons and one daughter. The Whangarei Borough Council appointed Mr J. D. Whitmore, of ,Christclmrch, borough engineer, at a salary of £4OO, oVt't of thirty-seven applicants. A New Plymouth wire announces the death-of Mr Richard Ching, who was one of the Otago Goldfield s pioneers. He afterwards went to the Wfcst Coast, ami later to Canterbury. Several years after deceased went to Opunake, where lie took 000 acres of Native land, which 'ho farmed for many years. District Nurse Jones has returned from a month's holiday leave in Sydned, and is at present stationed at the Masterton Hospital. Mr A. M. Myers, M.P. for Auckland 'Basft, who is major on the reservo df officers, TK:rd Auckland Regiment, has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
Mr George Falla, formerly stationmaster in this town, 'but now of Invercargill, has been on a flying visit to Masterton. He leaves to-day on his return to the sOu*th. Mr Cuthbert East, who has been acting as editor .of .the Timara Post for the last twelve months, has been appointed managing-editor of the paper; thus filling ..the position vacated by Mr R. W. Robswn, who recently resigned the managership. ' Ex-Sergeant-Major James livuigston 5 who .served in the Maori War, was presented with:the New Zealand war medal at Hawera on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of a large gathering of'-veterans. A Wanganui telegram states that Mr C. E. Mackay., ex-Mayor of Wanganui, was yesterday presented with an illuminated address and i». gold albert, and Mrs Mackay with a gold necklace, to commemorate the completion of the sewn years' term of office.
Mr A. Knox has been appointed to represent the PaKiatua County Council at a deputation to wait upon the Minister for Natnre Affairs at Wellington next week, .regarding the collection of rates on Ntctive lands.
