The utterly unreasonable strike at
Timaru has had the effect of arousing thousands of people who have been more or less apathetic in the past, and inspiring them with the determination that, come what may, a fiv. irresponsible agitators and their dupes shall not be allowed to dislocate the business of the country and inflict loss upon innocent people just whenever the mood takes them.—Christohurch Press.

There should bo no talk in Aia*rica of the "way book," or in New Zealand of the "backblocka." . Rapid communication with the torwns in regard to transit and telephone services must be established, and the country should, as far as possible, bo catered for liberally in regard to <.omforts and amusements. All this i K feasible, and were the ■Gorenvment to move in the direction of improving the conditions in the country they would be assisting materially towards the solution of a perplexing problem. Thoro is no reason why, with the exercise of a little ordinary wisdo-n on the part of Ministers, the cult of the country life should not become firmly established in the minds of the growing population.—Southland News.
