The Taranaki Rugby 'Union has written to the Waira'rapa Union agreeing to Thursday. August 27th, as the date, of the representative match in the Wairarapn. Tn response to an alarm sounded on the_ Masterton firebell at a quarter past eight last evening, the Fire Brigade proceeded to a private dwelling at Kuripuni, occupied bv Mr Jackson, where it was found that a mattras-; had caught alight in one of the bedrooms. The outbreak was quickly got under, and before any serious damage was caused.

The shareholders of the WairarapaTerminating Building Society met onT Thursday night to dispose of an appropriation of £3OO by sal?. As no' tenders were received, a ballot was proceeded with, the result being that the £3OO was secured by Mrs E. L. Brown, of Marton.
The Palmerston North Borougli Council has increased the wapes of all labourers in its employ to Is lj-cl per hour, or a minimum of 9s pel* day. In proposing the increase, tlra Mayor stated that "No man could' keep a wife and family on a shilling*an hour. The cost of living had increased considerably • of late years,, and wages must be increased accordingly."
The Mastertou Racing Club has applied for October 16th and 17th and April 2nd and 3rd, ag the dates for its meeting during the next racing season. It is considered improbable, however, that unless the law is altered, a two-days' meetino- will be granted in the spring. The Club has made an important advance during the last year or two, and it ishoped that the day cut out of thespring meeting will shortly be restored.
During a discussion at the meeting of tlie Pahiatua Licensing Bench, Mr W. Tosswill suggested that a certain matter be referred to the Crown, Law Office. The Magistrate (Mr L. G. Reid) said ,he would back his opinion against that of the Crown Law Office. He had been Crown Law Officer himself for a period of twentyeight years, and hj? ventured the remark that he did not care for the opinion of a new-born Crown Law. Officer (laughter).

Mr Lvsnar has received a cablegram from Bristol informing him that the quota of 10,000 shares to be taken v there has been secured, and that the company would be registered immediately. Mr Lvsnar replied that New Zealand had applied for its minimum quota of 10,000 shares-, and the application money for these was cabled.
On the subject of the well-t steel superstition which sailors entertain regarding black cats, a correspondent writes to the Spectator as? follows- "About twenty years ago, when I was resident in North China, the British squadron, then "in Far Eastern waters, was steaming out of: the port of Chefoo. when a little black cat fell overboard from H.M.S. wanderer. At once the ship stopped, signalled to her consorts 'Cat overboard,' and the entire squadron oamo to a standstill.
