Some people really are.lucky (says the Auckland Star). After the last race at Ellerslie on Tuesday a punter, hurrying from the course to the sfcaiipn, dug his hands into his pockets with the idea of ascertaining just how he stood on the day. His chagrin, at finding himself minus l a £5 note received in the last dividend collected be imagined. With 'the characteristic optimism of the'speculator, .he retraced his steps ;_ the lost fiver, however, was not forthcoming. Ultimately, resigning himself to his -loss, he again joined the throng bound statiomvards. Passing the spot Avhere he first discoverer! his loss,- he was keenly on the Iqpk-out. and had the ektraordin"--ary luck to find the note in the mid- ■ die of the asphalt footpath. Pleasure at his discovery gave place to surprise, however, when a well-dress-ed woman,,coming towards him. and: seeing him pick up the crumpled paper, with all the coolness in the world, remarked: "That's mine, please!" "ft is not; although it is folded I can tell you that it is a £c| note, with a hole in the centre of it, and its mine!" was the indignant rejoinder of the man, and the' woman, without a word, hurried on. The extraordinary thing is that, between the time of the loss alid subsemrent recovery of the note—probably ten minutes—at least five thousand people must have walked over it. . BUYING A PIANQ.
