A DUAL PURPOSE BREED.

A NEW ZEALAND BREEDER'S AIM.

Mr W. Barton, of Featherston, who recently imported n number of Hal-, stein cattle from America, in the course odt an article in "Hoard's D.iiryiran," outlines his purpose in purchasing the "black and whites."

"The Holstein } I consider to be, in a good, heavy, rich country, almost a dual-purpose breed, although I can .well Tinderstind a dairy expert objecting to individuals which show a ; tendency to produce beef. "I should like to. say a few words in regard to dual-purpose/ cattle. I have, on my farm, hundred oows for breeding purposes. These cattle are a beef breed. They have cnlves on the farm, and tliey bring them up, and that is the only purpose they serve. It has often occurred to me that these cows, with the 'natural pastures they have in .New Zealand, and with a sufficient supply of labour to attend to them, could not only bring up their calves, l*at could also supply a; surplus for the purposes of manufacture, of two gallons of milk per day, extending over probably a period of some eight months. .

"Tn all countries a supply of beef cattle must be kept up. In this country at the present time there is a shortage, and within the next few years there will he a greater shortage of beef cattle, and I cannot see why on ranches a dual-pair pose breed of cattle could not be most useful. I admit that on a. small farm where feed has to be supplied in quantities for seven months in the year to stallfed cattle, the greatest amount of profit must be ohtiuned from them, but somewhere in the country the. beef breed of cattle has to be raised, and from my experience I cannot see why they should not produce milk at the snme time." - --
