ANNUAL DOG TRIALS
The Masterton Collie Club's dogtrials were continued at Te Ore Ore yesterday in beautiful weather. During the day there was a large number of interested spectators on theground.
The first event, headiiig, driving; and yarding, was concluded, the open class being won by ;S. Kennedy's Boss' Junr, and the local class by F. W. Jones' Sweep. The work of the leading dogs in each class was of a very high order, and a .striking example of the wonderful sagacity of the present day breed of sheep dog. The Championship Long Head was commenced afterwards, and at the end of the day twenty-eight dogs had completed their task. Some magnificent work was witnessed in this event', which will be concluded this morning, eight dogs having yet to compete. The Championship Short Head and Yarding competition will be gone on with immediately after the initial championship event fa finished. Yesterday's results were as follow: Class I; Heading, Driving and Yarding.—(A) Open. (B) Open only to competitors residing within the boundaries of the Wairarapa and Masterton Electoral districts. Competitor and dog to be at least three months resident in the r districte. Head and bring back 4&G yards, drive through ring, drive 40 yards to' a peg; where camnetitor may leave sheep and; open thp aate. and yard in a pen of four hurdles (one hurdle to bo used as a gate, and may be used as a wing). Dog and worker to keep behind slieep to the peg. Time allowed, 12 minutes. Points—Heading 7, bringing back 7, driving 8, style at yarding 4, yarding 4, command 10. A, or Open Class: First prize £ls, second £6, third £3, fourth £2. B: First prize £7, second £4, third £2, fourth £l. Class A.—S. Kennedy's "Boss Jwnr," 31 "points," 1; H. "Boss Junr." —Cast to left; went out in. good line and fast; headed in SOseos; s tarted return rather rashly; sheep a little to left; then good to fence; some trouble at foJice; rash on flat; drive fairsheep a. little past pen; penned nicely at sooond attempt. Points: <5, 5, 6, 3, 3, 8; total 31.
"Gyp."—Oast to right; went out fast on good line, but he&dgcl rather close in 65sec; started return quietly, but kept too much to top side of sheep; improved lower down, and did steady work over flat and straight through flags; a fair drive, but a, little past pen; some delay at pen, but penned at first attempt, , Points: 6, 6, 5, 3, 3, 7; total 30. MSweep."—Cast to left, and went in <£ood line, but set sheep once before heading; started return carefully, but made a rash turn when sheep moved; worked better lower down, bt»t rash over flat; delayed unnecessarily in getting sheep into position at pen, but penned at first attempt. Points : 5, 5, fi. 3. 4. 6 ; total 29. "Tweed."—Cast to left, went nut fflpt and in jjood line, and headed rashlv in 85,« ec; rasli , work to flat; but improved to rnirc through flags, and fair drive- sheep into position and penned nioiy at firsp attempt.
