DIVIDED OPINION.

| The July Conference of the Social Democratic Party in New Zealand is being looked forward to with more than ordinary interest. If the forces of such irreconcilable elements as Labourites, Federationists, Syndicalists, Socialists, and 1.W.W.-ites can be brought together, then we shall be prepared to admit that the days of miracles are not past. Mr David McLaren, of Wellington, is a prominent Labourite, and this is what he said in a recent letter: — ■ "We must affirm finally that our ( policy is constructive, democratic, / legislative, and administrative, and ■' that it is not class-conscious hatred and organisation for purposes of revolution by force of numbers, ' J Mr G. R. Whiting, a leading Socialist, of Christchurch, in a circular ju,st issued by the "Unity Congress Committee," says:— "Every department, union and worker —if we are going to have our strikes effective—must be loyal to the national executive after they have given their decision. If this decision is in favour of a, strike through some injustice beifig done to the workers in any indlustry or calling, then every worker in the organisation from the North Cape to the Bluff must be prepared to walk away from their work instantly the signal is given; there must ■be no murmur, no complaint and no

grumbling." Which view is to be accepted by the July Conference—that of David McLaren, of Wellington, or of G. B. Whiting, of Ohristchurch?
