Gooseman. one; of the o!d school of trainers, is retiring from public training, and in future will train privately for Messrs George and Paul Hunter, the well-known Pormugahnu sportsmen. Gooseman lias trained horses for many years and had som? good ones through his hands at different times, including Cynisea, Mystification, Bliss, Chatterer, Evening amid many others. Shackle, -who, several years ago, raced successfully in the colours of Mr Frank Armstrong, Akitio, is again in work at Hastings. His mission will be cross-coimti-v events. Braeburn, who won a double at the last Tauherenikau w>6t:ng, is being prepared for the Hawke's Bay Ladies' Bracelet, an event for which in th? Hawke's Bay there, is kern competition. Mr Keith Whit'*, Braoburn's owner, will ride thy brown gelding. Mr White has several times anight the judge's eye as a gentleman rider. Mr T. DwVer, who is well-known in Masterton and th? \V aiiarapa, has five horses in work at Itandwick. Kopane, who raced in the Wairarapa, has won four races at the small meetings around Sydney, while Ashbv has won on five occasions. Mr Dwyor, in writing to a friend in Masterton, speaks well of a five-y *ar-old ma: in his stable named Hermindale,, and by Ayr Laddie from- Gaussina. three-voar-old colt by Simmer also gives promise. Sporting men generally will regret to h?ar of the death of Mr J. Cotter, who died in Masterton. on Saturday. The deceased was for many years connected with racing, and although he never had any great success he was very popular with brother trainers and sportsmen. His remains were interred in the Masterton cemetery yesterday, and the funoral was largely attended. Sir Knox is going on the right way at Opaki, and looks big and wall. The tracks now being on the soft side the son of Sir Laddo will no doubt show some of his best form. Messrs O- F. Vallance (Renowned May), B. Vallance (Ben Hobson), and Tas Smith (Firestick) were out with the Manawatu hounds at Taitai on Saturday. t Mr J. H. Pollock i« up-to-date with th'? issue of the handicaps for the South Wairarapa trots.
Neither Emerson nor Deeley improved their position on the list of winning jockeys at tho Egmont fixture. Th© meeting was notable from the fact that there wn-e three double winners in Ineuru, Kaniki arid Invader. The former appears to V' back to her ibest form, amd should be heard of at the Wanganui meeting this week.
L?onta is likely to start at a very short price in the Connolly Handicap. The locally-owned Conqueror has a splendid advertisement in Leonta, who must be regarded as about the best of this sire's stock. Six wins out of seven starts is a remarkably good performance. At the Kalgoorlie meeting this month Susa, by St... Ambrosr—Susannah, won the Mullingar Plate, six furlongs. Susa is one of Mr H. A. Kmiffht's breeding, and a half-brother to Don Orsino and Cn'-'+e' bnry. The Auckland-bred Bnndorrl], by Spalpeen, won a double at the Mudgee (N.S.W.) meeting this month. Blu?.
