MONTHLY MEETING
Tho monthly meeting of the Mastcrton County Council was held yesccrday, there being present Councillors \V. J. Weloli (Chairman), 11. F. H. Jjootharn, D. W. Foreman, J. Miller, A. J. Percy, I). J. Cameron, A. J. I'atchett, C. Cross and H. J. Too-
It \wis decided, en tho motion of Cr Miller, that Uu> Government bo asked to improve the proposal oi th IV.Mson's road settlers for the expenditure of a grant on that road. Mr John Brown asked the Council to lower the pipe culverts on the road fronting his property, sections 5 and (3, i:.;c.'.vburr.'.v. Estate. He stated that at present the surface water lodged (•'.!• his property.—On tlu motion of Cr Cameron, the matter was left in the hands of Cr Percy and the engineer.

Mr Jeremiah Savage asked the Council to repair the road leading to , his property at Tiraumea. —The engineer stated that the road in question had not: yet been legalised.—lt was decided to inform Mr Savage "that steps wei'e being taken to legalise the. road, and as soon a s these are completed, the matter will receive consideration./ Mr Henry Burling asked permission to erect a bridge across the Tiraumea road—The Clerk stated that the matter had been advertised, and there ■ were no objections.—-On. the motion of Cr Cross, it was decided that the permission'asked for be granted on the usual conditions. A letter was r?ad from Mr F. Percy In reference "to the repairs to the ]Vfahgatakot» road, stating that it worn Id be useless t.o expend further m-oriey. on the road unless the drains from an adjoining property were blocked up.—-The matter was left with Cr Cross and the engineer, to confer with the settlers interested, and with power to act. . Mr V. F. A. Fear directed the attention, of the Council to the state of the footpath in front of liig premises ih Lansdowne in case of heavy rain.— Referred' to the engineer, with power to act.
Messrs A. McKay, G. W. Vennel arid* C. Eaton asked that something he done to place the Glendon'akl-Wai-rere road in repair.—On the motion of Cr Miller, the engineer was instructed to place' the road in order. A letter >va» read fi'om Mr J. P, Lett, drawing attention to the unsatisfactory state of the drain in front of his property at Langdale.— Left in the hands of the Councillor for the Riding and the engineer to deal with. Mr C.' F. Gawith asked that the question, of Mary street, Upper Plain, be reopened, as the previous requisition .had been signed under' ,a misapprehension.—lt was decided that, as the matter had already be mi dealt with, it could not be re-opened by the Council. ; - FINANCE COMMITTEE.
The report of the meeting of the Finance Committee was read as follows :
Cr Be.etha.rn presided over the meeting of* the Finance Committee. The treasurer reported as follows: Geneneral fund account, dr., £3lO 3s sd; local bodies loan account, cr., £152 4s 2d; accounts credit balance, £363 Os 4d. The receipts since Auril Ist totalled £lOl 17s. The Committee decided to recommend the Council to adopt the advice of the County solicitor in the matter of, declining to' pay certain charges made by the 3V.Z. Express Company on the dump waggon obtain 3d from Wairoa. Consideration of the offVr of the Land Board to dispose of a portion> of seer tion 38 ;Block' 111., Puketoi, for a\ roadman's cottage site was held over until the n ?xt. meeting!
ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report from the engineer (Mr D. McLa-chlaiv was read at yesterday's -meeting of the Musterton County Council: — OPAKI RIDING-. Wiiingawa to Camp and Branch Roads.—With the cowcurrence of- tlie Ohaiuman I have let to A. E. Blade, a contract for tha delivery of 62f0 cubic yards of metal. To date there has been some 350 cubic yards* delivered on the main road—ss c.y. on Jackson's road, 121 c.y. on Dorset's
road, and 230 e.y. on North end of the YVaingawa to Camp road. Tenders are now called for 7<X) cubic yards on tho section between Diver's cornor and Bruce's road. •Factory Road.—The metalling and repairs to above road have been satisfaction ly completed. Matahiwi lioad. —The sill to the platform bridg? INorth of Matahiwi homestead, which became undermined, has been raised and a phr put ■in, making the structure saf> f« -r traffic. RANGITUMAIJ RIDING. Kaka-amu road.—ln- accordance. with the iCouncil's directions, 1 have let a contract for the delivery of 210 cubic yards of metal to A. ti. Moiv gan.. TJie contract is now practically eomplet-etl. Vane's Road.—Two small box culverts on the above road '.requiring renewal, will he lvpla'ced by new "lien the water is sufficiently low for the execution of the work. The rough timber platform bridge on the Kaikoata road has been redeck -d. Small metal repairs have been effected on the Ma tu pi hi road.
WAJNUIORU RIDING. Blairlogie-East Coast Road. — A 16fcjt platform bridge, to which Mr fatham contributed £lO, has been erected, and the earthwork approaches thereto.
I have arranged with Mr Tatha.m for the hire of .his teams for metal* ling the to bridge and some urgent repairs in the vicinity of Eparaima and rtonu-wood. Meta 1 repair. l '. J lie hired teams were' engaged until the last heavy rains' in tile vicinity of the Bluirlogie quarry where a small length is left in a weak state of repair. Weraiti-Ferny hurst roa,-:i, contract wo. 291 delivery, 450 cnb.ii yds. of metal.—-A '.portion of the contract south of the Wainuioru is|vvithin a week of completion. Masterton-Waimata road, contract No. 288, delivery 780 cub. yds. of metal for repairs, was''completed on the 19tih ultimo.
Brancepeth road (Taiteru to Parae section). —As negotiations fell through with the original tenderer, it was deemed advisable to call fresh
tenders, and the tender of B. pulloty in terms of the council's resolution was accepted. UPPER TAUERIT RIDING,

repairs on Butler's, road, to which Mr, Miller agrees >o contribute £5.
ALFREDTOX RIDING
Utewai road, contract No. 286, 21.3 chains of me tailing. The balance of the grant lias been expended in extending th? contract to 2-f$ chains of metalling. , Sanders' road, contract No. 235, 97 chains G f:et bridle track. The-
work was completed on the 17th ult., with the exception of the month's maintenance. Alfredton-Weber road, contract No 287,* delivering 850 cub. yds. metal has been duly completed. With reference to the damaged cul-
vert on Mr' Napier's frontage, mentioned in my last monthly report (tno dealing with which was held over for a month) I consulted the Councillors for the riding, pointing out the urgency of proceeding with the work before wet weather set in, and I received authority to go cm with the work. A 2 x 2 x 40 feet culvert under an embankment has be?n put in on the Utewai road. Alfredten-Weher road, contra-ot No 287, delivering 950 cub. yds. metal has been duly completed and taken off the contractor's hands. Saunders' Flat.—The tunnel to substitute the culvert on Saunders' flat was commenced early last month. The men engaged became incapacitated and ceased work. The work is now, however, being continued under competent hands. Alfredton-Weber road.—The trres and stringer bridges approaching Alfredton have been re-decked. The .truss bridges.! over the Tiraumea and a 30-ft stringer bridge at Tiraumea homestead will also .require top-decking before the incoming season's wool traffic. It has been necessary to regrade a short length of road over a slip on the Castle Hill _road. The whares for the roadman at Mangat»kato awl Castle Hill are reported completed. <
