Mr C. A. iPoulson, formerly on the literary staff of our local contemporary, is at present on a visit to Masterton. Mr and Mrs F. H. Elcoate returned to Masterton last evening, after a most enjoyable holiday spent in Auckland and in rt-otoirua. Mrs G. Hatchings, of "Conbourne," j Wellington, is on a visit to Mrs J. Higgins, of Jtenall street, Masterton. The Duchess of Oonnaught continues to. make satisfactory progress, says a London cable.. ■ Inspectors Fleming and Stuckey, of the Wellington Education Board, are at preS -nt paying an. examination visit to the Masterton District High School. ( ; ; At a public meeting in Wellington, it.was decided to present an illuminated address to Mr David McLaren, ex-Mayor, in recognition of his m'any valuable services to the city. •Mr Rod Mcßae, of Masterton, will be one of th.3 shearers' representatives at a conferenoe to be held with the sheepownerfi in Wellington on June 4th, to discuss the questions of wages and conditions of shearing. Councillor A. J. Patchett took his seat for a first time at the meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday. He was welcomed" by the Chairman, who expressed the hope that he would he of assistance in the transaction of the business of the Council. Councillor Patchett briefly acknowledged the welcome, and said he would do his best to maintain th: dignity of the Council. The death occurred somewhat suddenly in Bketahuna on Monday of Mrs Smith, wife of Mr William Smith, an old and respected settler of the Carterton Deceased, who was o6*"yeairs of age, was on a visit to her daughter, Mrs Prentice, ot Parkville. The remains of deceased were taken to Caiterton yesterday morning for interment. Mr Xiouis de flPelichet, of the firm of de Peliohet, McLeod and Co., Napier, was found dead in his bedroom at the Pacific Hotel yesterday morning. Deceased .was in a sitting position o T the bed, half undressed, apparently having expired when removing , his? clothes the previous evening. He was suffering from heart trouble. He was 61 years of age, and .unmarried. Mir de PtSiichet was widely and popularly known throughout Hawke's Bay, and his sudden death will be sincerely regretted by a wide circle of friends. He was for some years manager of Mr Spencer Gallon's station at Waipukurau, Hawke's Bay.
