MAWSON EXPEDITION.

A WIRELESS MESSAGE

AX ANTARCTIC NEWSPAPER

(Received this morning 12.30 o'clock.) SYDNEY, May 12. I)r Mawson has sent the following wireless message:— "Commonwealth Bay, Adelie Land. —The first number of the Adelie Blizzard, Monthly publication has just been produced. This is the first real newspaper employing a cable column, published in Antarctica. It consists of twentysix pages, and so far has a circulation of seven copies. The editor is Dr McLean, who send s greetings to his contemporaries, and applies to bo admitted as an honorary member of the Australian Journalists' Association. The wireless plant is in good condition, although the Aurora magnetic storms, in a lino between here and Macquarie Island, often interfere with the transmission of messages. This month there lias been slightly less wind than in the corresponding month of 1912, although there was some severe snowfalls, which practically s nowed up the hut. Anyway, there is no chance now of the hut being blown away. When the winter set in last year, the bay was frozen over for only a couple of days, but now it is frozen hard for as great a distance as the eye can see. Shortly before the Bay froze, there was a.n exodus of all penguins and seals. The only bird s remaining are Antarctic petrels and snow-petrols. One of the dogs presented by Captain Amundsen met with an accident and had to be killed. It was immediately pounced on bv the others, who ripped it open and ato it. All the scientific instruments are running well. We are oallenting some valuable data. As the bay is frozen, we expect to be able to do som° internsting marine work early in the spring. . The climate is fine and bracing. All the members of the expedition are in the best of health."
