LABOUR LAND-GRAB.
On his return from a visit to England and Canada, Mr Scaddan, the 'Labour Premier of Westralia, had something to say about his land trail sactions along the route of the trans, continental railway. Ml Scaddan admitted that he had secured a block of 324,500 acres. but he did not consider it a subject for public comment. "Everybody had the same chance as I had," he contended, "ft was the best advertisement th > land got when it was known that J had taken some of it. The main objection to my association with it seems to be that 1 got- in first.". That is, as the Christchurch Pre.<?s points ont, quite a characteristic way of looking at the matter. It is also characteristic that a Labour Premier, with presumably the strong views as to the, private holding of huge blocks of land at an extremely low rental, should tak 1 advantage of an opportunity of securing n tlr'rd rf a million acres. The transaction was 110 doubt per fectly legal; whethef Mr Scaddan's action is consistent with his professions is. another matter altogether.
