Tlio success or otherwise of the project to opsn up the East Coast by railway will depend upon the spirit of tolerance exhibited by the districts that a.re directly or indirectly interested. There must be no undue rivalry between Napier and Wellington, and the intervening townships must abandon all parochial feelings in the matter. The energy of the whole of the eastern portion of the Wellington Province should be centred upon the objective of opening, up the lanu The question- of route should b? left to an independent commission of experts, whose decision should be final. If the subject is approached from p. national (standpoint-, and the agita-tion-is prosecuted on these lines, the success of the undertaking will be assured. If parochialism is permitted to obtrude itself, the whole scheme might as well be abandoned.
