PROPOSALS FOR TRADES PEOPLE.

. CFo tlia Editor.) Sir,—vXow that tlie holidayquestion is settled for at least another year. perhaps the employees may consider tlie advisability of closing the tshops at 5.30 .p.m. during the winter months. Other towns, and some not far from home, are moving in the matter, and surely .Masterton is not going to be behind hand. A T ot only the employees, but the employers, would appreciate the movie. When you take into consideration the amount of business that is usually done ibetween 5.30 and 6 p.m., surely it is not asking too much. And, plko, why not close on Thursday at 12 o'clock instead of 1 p.m.? Other towns of more importance are doing this, so why not Ma«terton ? Seeing that the employers have earned their point, I think it is up to them to consider the employees. Of course there ai'e bound to be some who will object to one,' if not to both, of these proposals; but I think the majority o fthe .business men are men of common sense, and will see the force of these proposals. Perhaps your valued paper would help to get the matter moving.—T am, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO. Masterton, May 7, 1913.
