BOROUGH EMPLOYEES.
QUESTION OF WAGES
The question of increasing the wages paiid to Borough workmen and employees at the municipal ga>s works, came up for discussion at last night's meeting of the Master ion Borough Council. The Mayor gave a comparative statement of the wages paid to the employees by other municipal bodies and novate gas companies. He vouched the explanation that the Masterton Borough Council was paying its employees at a. higher rate than the average municipal bodies. He considered the matter was one of the utmost importance, and one that should be thoroughly gone into by every councillor before a decision was airived at. Cr. Ewington moved that, as an opportunity should be given of studying the matter, the question should be held over till next meeting. Cr. Temple, in secondiug the motion, said he would like to see the matter dealt with bv a committee. He thought that, as the quesion of 'committees was likely to cocne before the Council, it might be well to hold the matter ovev till the committee question was dealt with. The Mayor said that as the question of committees was not before the meeting, Cr. Temple's suggestion was not in order. Cr. King said he agreed with Cr. Temple that the matter of wages could be better dealt with by a committee of three or five councillors. Cr. Candy thought the matter had been held up long enough, and should be dealt with straight away. Cr. Ewington's resolution, on being put to the meeting, was carried.
