FIXTURES. May 8 and '..'.--Athburton County R.O. Autumn. May 14 and I'i- -Egmont R.C. Winter May '>2 *,id °2L— Wanganui J. C. June 3 a*-i 4.—Dunedin J.C. Wintor.
There will be racing at Ashburton on Thursday and Friday. Nominations and entries for the Otaki Maori Club's meeting close with tho secreatry at 8.30 p.m on Friday. The programmeo is a most, attractive one, and should ensure largo outries. The. flat racing; season is now practically ended, ar.d the illegitimate game begins at Wanganui this month. The Native (11.9) and Antarctic (11.12) figure at the head of the handicaps in the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase respectively. Appin is spoken of as one of the most likely jumpers to win big honours across country this season. The local trainer, T. Higgins, who was present at the Blenheim meeting last week, states that the trip across to Wellington was an eye-opener, and he wonders how every horse on board the boat was not badly injured. Leapukii and. Top Note fared better than tho other horses, although they were also knocked about somewhat.
Jt is bad luck indeed for the owner of The Great" Mogul that his hoi'SO should strike so much trouble on the return trip from Blenheim. The Royal Fusilier gelding has been showing such consistent form that a good stake was likely to have been picked up by him at any time. There is very little doing on the Opaki tracks at present, trainers for the most part giving their charges an easy time. Nat Williams, the Clareville trainer, leavey for Otaki thi smonth, and will in future train his string on the West Coast. Full Rate is being kept at the jumping business, and takes fairly kindly to it. A hac hurdle race should be well within the Officer gelding's reach* Leapuki is amother candidate for jumping honours, and report states that the- Lethe gelding is the making-; of a champion hurdler. Olliver, Deeley and Emerson appear to have an interesting content before the.m for the jockey supremacy. Should Emerson mot leave for Australia, his chance will be favoured, although with the heavier scale of j weights, Olliver and Deeley jvill havo I an advantage. | There are thirty horses nominated ! in each of the Great Northern Hur- | dies and Steeples, while the Winter I Steeplechase ha 6 attracted thirty-one. The three mares, Soidtoria, Antoinette and Labour Day, "who cost the biggest end of £3OOO, have so far j not handed any pa.rt of the amount back to their plucky owners. The former has not yet faced the barrier, and Antoinette only once, but Mr T. H. Lowry's mare, although started several times and rum- fairly well, has not won, and is in the market. With tho exception of Hautere, Armagh, Okaihau, Partiutu,, Appin, Antarctic, Hoanga and Dorando, we have to take most of the others on trust in the Great Northern Steeplechase, but there may 1m? a chance of an embryo Record Reign, Antarctic, or Oorazon being imearthed, but their mimber is very small. What's wrong with Theodore?; When auctioned recently the sera of Me.rriwee--Heavenry Twin brought 32gn,s. As his pace is undeniable, he is verv cheap. He cost his former owner SOOgna Change of stables may change'his luck. The evergreen Paritutu has engagements at the A.R.C. winter gathering, being nominated in the G.N. and Winter Steeplechases. He has a good credential in downing the best horse im the Dominion between the flags, the late Corazon, who died latelv. Whilst Mr J. B. Reid is away in Europe, Murray Hobbs will have charge of three "of Mr Redd's juveniles, two fillies and a gelding. The Avondale Jockey Club paid the Government totalisator tax over the late meeting amounting £999 7s Id.
