THE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

We heartily congratulate the burgesses of iMasterton upon! their selection of representatives to serve them upon the Borough Council. The poll was the heaviest on record, and the issue was plainly between the business interests and the Labour party. That eight of the nine successful candidates are business men, is something for which the town should be thankful. The Labour party fought a vigorous fight, and deserve credit for the enthusiasm they displayed. The. half-holiday question was the great is&ue involved, and only three of those returned are in favour of Saturday. A substantial victory has therefore been 'secured for those who wish to preserve the interests of the trading community. It was unfortunate for some of the retiring Councillors that they wetre not, identified with the major parties that were at work. Both Councillor Pragnell and Councillor Prentice have done good service for the borough; but they had to yield "to circumstamces. We are glad to be able to say that the election was fought throughout in ,the ■best of spirit, and that the decision of the electors was, in most cas?s, taken philosophically. We congratulate Messrs Winzenberg, King, Sellar and Kemball upon their return. They are untried mem, but their recognised business ability will prove of great assistance to the Council. Messrs Donald and Lamb' put up an excellent fight, and have no reason to feel .dissatisfied with' their position on the poll. Taken altogether, the new Council is one which may be expected to render useful service to the borough.
