l)r Clarke, Archbishop of Melbourne, is now out of danger. Miss Kilniartin is at present in -charge of the Kaiparoro school. A London cable states that Commissioner Lamb, of the Solvation Army, sails for Canada, Australia. and New Zealand in-May, Messrs Charters "and Stuokey, Inspectors of the Wellington Education Board, .-ire at present on a visit to the Masterton district. Sir William Hall-Jones, with his wife and three daughters, have arrived at Melbourne on their return to New Zealand, s ays a Melbourne cable. The Rev. A. Don, Chinese missionary in New Zealand tindar the auspices of the Presbyterian Church, has been transferred from Dunedin to Palmerston Jsorth. . Mr R. G. Vile, who has been elected to succeed Mr L. B. Bradstock as President of the Eketahuna County Hockey Association, is also President of the Eketahuna Football Olirb. Mr W. J. Barleyman, a well-known settler of Kapouga-, Taranaki., died suddenly a few days back. Deceased who was fifty-one years of age, was born in Blenheim, and educated at the Nelson College. Mr F. Murray, Government Stock Inspector, died on Saturday morning in a private hospital an New Plymouth. A tumor on the brain was the cause of his death. He was much appreciated and respected throughout the South Taranaki district. Mr Daniel Hannan, of Leyin, who was at one time Police Sergeant at
Masterton, has lately been in rather a serious stalte of health. He has just returned to his home, after receiving medical treatment at Palmerston North. Numerous Wairarapa friends will regret to hear of the death of Mrs A. M. Mowlem, formerly of Palmerston North, which occurred at Auckland on Sunday last. The deceased lady was theonly daughter of the Rev. C. K. Beecroft, a prominent Methodist minister. Mr Frederick Train, "storekeeper, of Waitotara, has -definitely decided to • contest the Patea seat in the Liberal interest. The Tribune says he is understood to be tin; accredited candidate .of the party for the electorate, Mr o ; J)ea having stated that he will not re-contest the seat,. The' Rev. Mr Ryan, who has been spending the past few months with 'friends at Mangatainoka, is leaving the district this wrek on his return to England. Mr Ryan, who wn« suffering from a nervous breakdown, came out to the Dominion for the benefit of his health, which has since shown much improvement. Mr R... Macdonald, of the firm of Messrs Toss will and Macdonald, solicitors, of Pahiatua. and formerly of t Dannevirke, is severing his eonnec- ; tion with the firm, having received an appointment as manager of the Waverley branch of a Wangairui legal , firm. The following visitors are at the Club Hotel, Masterton: Mr and Mrs Bennett and child, Mrs and Maes Groves, Mr and Mrs Brown, Mrs Kevins and son, Mrs Gottern, Miss Rogers; Messrs Lavie, Ball, Hewitt, McCallum, Athya, Nicholls, Snowden, Stokes, Downes, Bock, O'Connor, Anderson, Little, Gardner, Andrews, Collins, Leatham, Troupe. A pleasing little function took place yesterday morning, when the carriers of Palmerston gathered to make a presentation to Mr F. Cording, delivery clerk at the railway station, who leaves on Monday next to take over the position of stationmaster at Cross Creek, Wairarapa. ' 7n making the ; presentation, Mr S. T. Hunt referred to the courtesy Mr Cording had shown to the carriers during his term of office in Palmerston. Another well-known old identity in the person of Mr William Moore, late of Milburn, Otago, passed away at his sister's residence, Kirk Michael, Isle of 1 Man, on March 12. The deceased gentleman landed in New Zealand in 1861. He was a seafaring man, and held a' second mate's certificate. He tried his.luck on the goldfields, and was amongst the first at the Gabriel's Gully and Ihinstan Tushes. A special feature of the enthusiastic: meeting of householders of the Fernridge school on Monday wa s the reference made to the retiring chairman (Mr H. Evans). Mr R. J. Dagg referred in eulogistic terms to the valuable services Mr Eva*ns had rendered during the ten years he had occupied the chair, the many sacrifices, he had made, and the warm interest he had always taken in the welfare of the school. It was unanimously decided the meeting place on record iheir appreciation of the services of Mr Evans during his term of office.
