BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— Wo take this opportunity of returning you ovtr sincere thanks for th 4 confidence you have reposed in us in the pa.st ia re-1 presenting you in your Municipal matters, and trust the policy we have adopted of always voting for what we have considered to he in the best interests of the Borough as a whole, will warrant you in returning us again as your Representatvies. We venture to draw your attention to some of the measures in which we, have taken a prominent We as "members of the Ma-s----terton Closer Settlement League, assisted in securing the purchase by the Government of two properties near Masterton for small farms settlement, and have secured the promise of the Government to purchaseland in Masterton for workmen's homes. Recognising the necessity for a better town water supply, we have, as Councillors, assisted in- forwarding this work, plans for which Engineer. We have been active workers on the : Town Beautifying and are strongly in favour of extending that work. We have had a large share in bringing the Public "Park up to its present attractive state, and favour further progress in this direction. The Council has endeavoured on several occasions to induce Lanstlowne to join the Borough, believing that amalgamation would be to the benefit of both, their interests being t identical in every way. If returned as' Councillors, we shall in the future, as in the past, see to it that the outlying streets of the Borough are properly cared for, and as far as money goes all parts of the Borough shall have a square deal. In regard to Municipal Offices, Reading Room and Library, the Council has had draft plans prepared, and these will be in due course submitted to the Burgesses when the money market is more favourable. The street lighting also is receiving attention, the.sum of £2OO having been placed on last year's estimates for automatic street lighting. These; should be installed as soon as the | necessary connections are made. I The Half-holiday Question came before the Council on January 18th last, and Crs. Pragnell, Elliott, Temple and Ewingtoti and the Mayor voted to retain- Thursday. Four other.Councillors voted against Thursday and in favour of Saturday. On the vote of the Mayor Thursday was retained. We are not in favour of the present day being altered in Masterton, unless by vote of the people. The Government ought to decide the day for the' whole Colony. Tin our opinion, the appointment of the Council as a Committee of the whole is a mistake. Sectional Committees get a better grip of details, and the importance of such undertakings as Gas and Water Supply, Park Improvement, and Public Works it is almost essential the work should be fully considered by small Committees in the interests of economy and efficiency, and afterwards submitted to the whole Council. The financial position of the Borough Council is in a very satisfactory condition. For the past two years we have lived within our means, and have a balance to credit on the General Account on this year's operations of £179. The overdraft on the 31st March was £2,071, being over £l,lOO less than last year. The lowest for many years. Owing to the increased liabilities of the General Account, due to requirements under the Hospital and Charitable Aid, Fire Maintenance, Etc. tion: and Street Maintenance, Etc. it is essential that the affairs of the Borough' should be in the hands of experienced business men, whose interests are identical with that of the rat?payers, whom they represent. The Polling Day is on Wednesday, 30th instant, and we trust every Elector will recognise his or her responsibility and record their vote.—Yours Faithfully* F. W. TEMPLE .T. C. EWINGTON JL P.
