SPORTING.

TO-DAY'S RACES. (By "Also Started.") The Autumn meeting of the Masterton Racing Club opens to-day on, the Opaki course, and as the weather. gives every indication of being ideal a- highly .successful gathering should be assured. The acceptances are most satisfactory, the Waipipi Cup being the only event which has not attracted a field as large as might be wished. The day's programme will be commenced with the Maiden Hack Race, which is run under weight-fox-age conditions, and is open to two-year-olds. It is worthy of not? that this, event has been won by two-year-olds on many occasions, and for that reason one of the six youngsters engaged may be looked upon as likelv to repeat the performance. Sir Moseley, who ran well at Hastings the other clay, may prpve tne best of the bunch. Of the older horses Master Lupin, Jnna Laddo and Conziska have some fair form to recommend them. The April Handicap should prove interesting with Blue Lake and Mon Ami competing. The latter is very well, and will no doubt be heavily sup- : ported. Leapuki is also in good fetj tie, and may be depended upon to run prominently. Glenfern has been doing great work .on the tracks, and it started )< in the mile hack event may he counted upon to put up fast time. Papamarama, Top Note and Austin are the bet* of the others. On Wellington form, Sir Knox should be hard to beat in the big event. He has been doing all that lias been lysked of him in his work, and should give an excellent account of himself. Leonta, who has raced well in hack company under heavy weights, is expected to show up well.. In handicapping Leonta at 6st 71b Mr Pollock does not evidently consider his most recent performances of great account. Imagination may have had enough of racing, but if herself, she should run well with 7st 111b. Vi will have the services of W. Bell, which may cause her to be supported. Suratura lias been showing such; consistent form of late that a win for her is overdue. In the Ruamahungav Hack the opposition is not very formidable, and Suratura may be' hard to beat. Bunkum and Otter may be her strongest opponents. The Ladies' Bracelet will attract a,lot of interest. The field will be a big one, and no doubt a good race will result. Huia, if a good horseman is secured, should take some beating. Redloh ran a second at Hastings last week, and may run well.. Miriam won a hack race at Pahiatua,. beating nothing, and the others havelittle to recommend them. The Opaki Welter bears a very open appearance, a number of those engaged being entitled to respect. Negative, on his form, at Trentham, is nicely in at Bst 1,21b, and should run well. Lady Volga was heavily backed at the Manawatu mesting, where she gained second honours in a seven furlong race.- A mile may be beyond her. Glenfern, if reserved for this event, will take some beating.. The day's racing closes with the Dash Hack, run- over five furlongs. The field includes two smart sprinters in The Great Mogul and Submersion, while Listen has also some form to recommend her. An interesting race should ensue between these three. Submersion has improved since racing at Trentham, and so may be relied on to keep the opposition very busy indeed. A large crowd is expected to be present, and the Club's energetic Secretary (Mi) A. Hatfeaway) has everything in- readiness), so that the public may look forward to a good day's sport under the best conditions. The train arrangements are good, and there will be an abundance" of motor cars and vehicles travelling to and from the course.
