THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
MR CORADINE ELECTED MAYOR. SIXTEEN CANDIDATES FOR THE COUNCIL. Mr Jame6 Moore Cora-dine was yesterday re-elected Mayor of Masterton, without opposition. This is the third successive year in which Mir Coradine has filled the chair, and ho previously sorved a term of two years. THE COUNCIL. Sixteen candidates have been nominated for the nine aeats on the Borough Council. In addition to Messrs W. G. Lamb, William Candy, Frederick W. Temple, J. jr. Prentice, W. Pragnell, H. H. Donald, and J. A. McEwen, whose names were publish«'d in yesterday's issue, the following nominations were received by the Re- - turning Officer yesterday : J. C. Ewiington, nominated by Messrs F. W. Temple and H. J. O'Leary. William L. Falconer, nominated by Messrs ■George Heron and EH Smith. Edward Flanagan, nominated byMessrs A. W. Hogg and G. Heron. William. It. Kemball, nominated by Messrs D. K. Logan and D. M. Graham. William Kemp, nominated by . Messns A. W. Cave' and G. Tony. ft. J. King, nominated by Messrs J. Hunter, J. Elliott, G. Terry and W. Spring. H. J. O'Leary, nominated by Messrs J. Sillars arid S. Kingdon. G. W. Sellar, nominated by Messrs J. Elliott and G. Heron. A. E. Winaenberg, nominated by Messrs T. B. Miohell and James McGregor. The retiring Councillors who are offering themselves for re-election are Messrs O'Lsary, Flanagan, Ewington, Temple, Prentice, Pragnell, and Candy. It- is understood that Messrs Candy, O'Leary, Flanagan, Me- ■ Ewen, Kemp, and Falconer are being run on th e Labour "ticket." Messrs Donald, Kemball, King, Lamb and Winzenberg are offering themselves as representatives of tho business section of tha community, and have adopted a joint platform, which <-s published in our advertising, ooluinus As a number of 'the candidates have not previously served <xa the Council, we give a brief sketch of each, for the benefit of the electors. MR H. H. DONALD. : Mr Harley H. Donald is a son .6, Mr Donald D,onald, one. of the pioneers of the tow,m, and who was a mem- ' ber of the first Borough 'Council formed, in Masterton. He ie a member of the firm of Donald and Sons, engineers, and has had a thorough business training. He is identified with various forms of sport, and has had experience in other townships. He •was a member of the Eltham Domain Board for some-years.. Mr Donald is am. imeompromising opponent of the . Saturday half-holiday, unless it be made universal. . MR W. FALCONER. Mr W. L. Falconer is an old and well-respected settler of the district, who has retired from active farming ... pursuits and is now living in town. ' He is a Justice of the Peace, and a member of the Farmers' Union and the School Committee. He ie under- .." stood to be standing on the .Labour "ticket,".-which supports the Saturday half-holiday movement. MR W. R. KEMBALL. . ' Mi- W. R. Kern-ball is a comparative newcomer to the town. He is, however, a young man who has taken a keen interest in local affairs since he came to Masterton. He occupies a responsible position at the Waingawa meatworks, and has considerable property and other interests in the town. He is Secretary of the Wairarapa Cricket Association, and has the reputa- - "tien of being a keen business man. He favours the "retention of Thursday as the half holiday. MR R. J. KING. Mr R. J, King is a well-known-bti»ine*3 im£ in town - H < » » kke n sport and takes* a wa ™ interest in civic affairs. As the' , tm^ ,lon " fle shot he is known throughout the <~?~ minion. He is also Secretary to the Gun Crub, and i*> exceedingly popular with the great bulk of the community. He, also, is a vigorous opponent of the' Saturday half-holiday, beside heing a prominent member of the Retailers' Association. MR W. KEMP. Mr W. Kemp is a ''tyro*' in local politics. He is a nurseryman by dfctrade, but has latterly been identifyBnng himself with public matters. He was one of the keenest debaters in the Mastertbriii Parliamentary Debating Society,though he sometimes erred «n the side of volubility. He has occupied a seat on the School Colnmiiijtee for twelvei months. He is understood to be one of the Labour "ticket." MB W. G. LAMB. Mr William G. Lamb is a member «f the firm of C. C. Ross and Co.. land agents and brokers. He haif had a- sound business training, and if keen in. a.ll commercial affairs. Som< years ago he established a vintage i' the district, which he was compellec to abandon owing to the carrying a No-license. Mr Lamb is an activ< f supporter of all forms of sport, anc -. is a firm believer in making the towi attractive. He opposes the Saturday half-holiday. MR J. A. McEWEN. Mr J. A. McEwen is a son of M Edwin' McEwen, who for years oeeu pied a seat in the Borough Council He 19 an employee of Messrs T Wagg and Co., and is understood t be standing on-the Labour "ticket.' Mr McEwen is a very energetic younj man, and takes a- keen interest ii athletic matters. He- is a prominen member of the Swimming Club, am has a good knowledge of local affairs having resided practically als his lif' the town. MR G. W. SELLAR. Mr G. W. Sellar is a partner in th< ■firm of Messirs W. B. Chennells amx CSo. He has had a thorough busrines<
training, having for years been associated with Mr Chennells. He is a member of the N.Z. Accountants' So"wty, and is very sound on finance. Mr Sellar is an old Masterton "boy," >\iio has sex*n the town develop, and knows its requirements. He is a k vt>n spoiu- and an enthusiastic horticulturist, ii;i'ig President of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Socif!,''. Me is opposed to the Saturday half-holiday. MR A. E. WINZENBERG. Mr A. E. Winzenberg has been; foa many years, in business in Masterton as a photographer. He is regarded as shrewd and sound an commercial matters, and has property interests to conserve. He has frequently been approached to stand for the Borough Council, but, until now, his business has not -permitted his taking the active interest in Borough affairs that i he would have desired. Mr Winzenberg is also an opponent of the Sat- i tirday closing movement.
OTHER CENTRES.
Napier.—-Messrs) J. V. Brown (present Mayor) and J. P. Thompson liave been nominated for the Mayoralty. Sixteen candidates have been nominated for the nine seats on the Borough Council. Eketahuna.—Mr F. C. Tumor has boen elected Mayor unopposed. Ten nominations have been received for six seats on the Council. -. W?«ir l g,tt? n v —Messrs McLaren (rehiring Mayor) and John P. Luke have been nominated for the Mayoralty. Tliirtynseven nominations have beer.ii received for the fifteen seats on the City Council. , Woodville.—Mr James Grant • has been returned • unopposed for the Mayoralty, Eleven candidates have been, nominated for the nine seats on the Council. Palmerston North. —Mr J. A. Nash has been re-elected Mayor unopposed for the fifth time. Fifteen nominations have been received for the nine seats on the Borough Council. Levin.—Mr 8., R. Gardiner, w>io has been Mayor since the Borough's inception in 1906, has beem re-elected un-opposed. There are eleven nominations for the nine seats on the Council. Pahiatua.—Messrs D. Crewe and J. D. Wilson have been nominated for { the Mayoralty. Only seven persons were nominated for the nine seats on 1 the Council, viz., Messrs J. W. Mills, ■ V. Mekalick, J. D. C. Crewe, G. E. | Clifton, D. P. Davidson, T. F. Howat, P and G. A. Vile, Christehuroh.— The sitting Mayor { (Ma- H. Holland), Mr T. J. Mcßride , (Labour) and Dr Thacker (Independent) have been nominated for the Mayoralty. Greytown.—Mr D. P. Loasby was returned as Mayor unopposed. Dannevirke.—Mr E. A. Ransom f was elected Mayor, unopposed. There * are fourteen nominations for' the nine * vacancies on the Borough Council. Gore.—There are three candidates y for the Gore Mayoralty—Messrs J. W. Kellv, David McDougall, and 15. ' O. Smith. For the Borough Council 1 there are eighteen candidates for nine seats. 1 ' Mataura.—Messrs John Lowden ' and T. J. Smith will contest the * Mayoralty. Only nine Councillors wcro nominated, and these were declared elected.
