PROSPECTS OF TRADE.
x ßy Telrarapk—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Speaking at tko animal meeting of tho Chamber of Commerce to-day, the President, .referring to the trade outlook, said that the money stringency was all New Zealand .had to fear,'and commercial men were necessarily acting with caution until the position became more settled. Fortunately there were some indications that an improvement had set in, for the Bank of England had reduced the rate of interest la.st Meek, and if the political outlook improved, no doubt the rate would be brought down another ha.lf per cent, presently. He quoted figures .showing the .favourable progress made in New Zealand produce. If present prices were maintained, he .said, it was safe to say that iNew Zealand exports to September 30fch next bade fair to exceed! last year's total by something over £1,000,000 or £1,250,000. The increase .was a largo one, and avouM bring the year up to about the level of the best year, 1909-1910. The price of wool had advanced the value oif the season's clip by about £1,000,000. Wellington had become the leading selling centre in New Zealand for the first time. Dairy produce Iliad now passed the £3,000,000 mark in exports, and was running close to frozen meat for •second place on the list. To sum up, the position of export lines was satisfactory. The increases iliad been quantity increases., and not price increases as the former were. The result of increased productiveness might be considered permanent. The latter were subject to market fluctuations.
