Minifie, formerly of Masterton, who has taken up home mission work in connection with the Qisborne Methodist Church, entered upon his duties on Sunday last. At Saturday's meeting of the Wa~ nganui A. and P. Association, it was decided to send to the late President, Mr Fred. Moore, a letter of condolence in the death of his son-in-law, Mr E. W. Broad. At the meeting of the Masterton •Borough . Council, held Hast evening, it was" decided, on the motion of Or Donald, that the Council's appreciation of the services rendered by Cr. James Elliott during tth|e fourteen years he occupied a seat on the Council, and who does not intend offering himself for re-election. Several Councillors also spoke eulogisticallv of Or Donald's term as a Borough Councillor. The latter is aot offering himself for re-election owing to his intention of visiting the Old Country during the present year. On the motion of Cr Elliott a vote of sympathy with the Mayor (Mr JM. Coradine) in his present indisposition, was carried at last night's meeting of teh Masterton Borough Council, and the hope expressed that he would be able to occupy his old seat when the new council took up office. At the conclusion of the rehearsal by the Masterton Amateur Theatrical Society la>t night, Mr R. J. Young, on behalf of the members, presented Mr F. H. Elcoate and Miss Jago, who are prominent members of the Society, and who are being married today," with a. handsome Morris chair. Mr Elcoate suitably acknowledged tho sift. Mr Eilcoate'was also the recipient yesterday from the staff of tho Bank of New South Wales of a handsome silver egg cruet. The presentation was made by the manager of tho Bank, Mr E. P.'Mouiitfort. By the death of Mr' Thomas McGuinnesg there is removed a man who in his time was prominently identified with this settlement (says the Taranaki Herald). In his youth he served in the Royal Artillery, and in the (early 'fifties came to ,N\»w Plymouth, and for years was warder or orderly at the Old Colonial Hospital at To Hemii, under Dr Peter Wilson. During the Maori war he served in the Taranaki Rifle Volunteer Corps, in which he held an ensign's commission, and in. the Militia, in which he held the rank of lieutenant, lie was 8-5 years of age.
