In the House of Commons, the Housing Bill framed by the Unionists was read a second time by 181 votes to 11. The Right Hon. W. H. Long, Unionist member for the Strand, promised that the Conservative Government would favour State grants to local authorities 'for housing purposes. The Right Hon. John Burns, President of the Board of Trade, opposed the Bill, on the ground that it was based upon the pernicious system )f doles.
