RAILWAY MANAGER.
The Government appears to have been fortunate Ln its selection of a General Manager of the Aew Zealand railways. Jt will be still more fortunate if it can get the railways straightened up without the expenditure of about a million of money. The trucks ana carriages are an a dilapidated condition, the -engines are worn-out, the permanent way is in a state of disrepair, and the whole service requires overhauling. The new manager will not be itn the Dominion five minutes before he tells the Government that half of its rolling-stock is 'fit only for the scrap-heap. The question of ways and means will then arise, and we shall probably havo to appeal to London for a railway loan. The railways can mever be made convenient or profitable with the present obsolete roll-ing-stock.
