THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
It is a pity that the President of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce should have construed the remarks passed by certain members at yesterday's meeting as an indication that opinions are divided on the question of the necessity for deviating the Rimutaka railway. When Mr Casel- [ berg stated that it would be wasting time to urge tho deviation of the Rimutaka railway upon the Minister and the Wellington Chamber, we took him to- mean that the time of the Chamber could be better employed in focussing attention upon the noeds of the backblocks. Possibly he would have made the position clearer had he been a little more explicit. There i& not a member of the Masterton Chamber who does not recognise the importance of this work. It is, however, a national undertaking that must come, sooner or later, by rea son of its absolute necessity. The Masterton-Waipukurau railway is, perhaps, of more pressing importance at the present juncture, for it will be one of the levers that will assist in securing the deviation. The Chamber considers that, in the meantime, it will be serving the best interests of the district by stressing the opening up of the backblocks.
