THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
(To tho Editor.) Sir,—There seems to lie an impression that the bulk of the employees in the principal retail shops in; Masterton will vote for the Saturday halfholidays PersonaJly, as an employee, 1 think it will be a suicidal step, and detrimental to the employers, what I should like employers to concede' .is this: Close the shops at 5 o'clock on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday., and Friday, and leave the other days as they are at present . The hulk of the shop-handg work 52 hours a week. By conceding the four hours, they would drop into line wjtih the bulk od the trades, who only work 48 hours a week. I do not.know why shophands should work longer than other trades. Oiir fellow-workers at other trades working till five otlock could make Saturday their shopping day., which is the natural day ifor them to do so. By closing on Saturday, we would make it very inconvenerint for them. Ido .not think that what I suggest is asking employers for anything they could not easily aeoede to, viz.., the. concession of four hours a week.— I am, etc., EMPLOYEE. Masterton, April 15, 1913.
