SPORTING NOTES.
(By "Also Started.") FIXTURES.' April 16 and 17—Hawke's Bay R.C. Autumn. April 16, 19.—Avondale J.C. April 23, 24.—South Canterbury J.C. April 24 and 25;—Masterton It.C. Autumn. April 30, May I.—Marlborough R.C. Mav 14, 15.—Egmont R.C. May 22, 24 Wangamii J.C. Acceptances for the Autumn meeting of the Masterton Racing Club are due with the- secretary (Mr A. Hatha way) on Friday next. On the same day weights for the Marlborough meeting are due. There will bo racing at Hastings and Avondale on Wednesday. Egmont nominations close to-night (Tuesday). Labour Day will probably start favourite in the Hawke's Bay Cup.. Should the track be at all soft. Mr Lowry' s mare should be prominent at the finish. F. D. Jones will, a.; usual, pilot the Soult mare. Manga roa should figure prominently in the Hawke's Bay Cup with the j minimum impost. Her form at Feilding would suggest that Manga- j roa is close to striking form. 'i Full Rate was given a turn over the t schooling battens at Clareville on Saturday morning, J. Hercoek acting as pilot. Hikrian, who has boon out of commission for over twelve months, will make his reappearance at the Pahiatua meeting to-morrow. The San Fran gelding has been jumped, and shows signs of proficiency over small battens, and should he keep sound, wilL no doubt pay his way during the coming season. The Achilles —Bellicent colt, which was purchased by Mr H. Hodge at the Waikanae sale in 1912, was handed over to N. Williams on Thursday. The youngster has grown into a splendid type of thoroughbred, and, as he has been fed and stabled by Mr Hodge, he looks in. fine fettle to commence his education. Emperador should see a short price in the Porongah&u Handicap, but will be up a-agonst some smart ones in Blue Lake, iGladiole and Co. Mon Ami was unlucky at Palmerston and should have won the concluding event. The Soult mare gave a big start away to the rest of the field, and was just touched off. She should be particularly hard to beat at Masterton. Canute is being given a chance in certain quarters to win the Hawke's: Bav Cup. In her future engagements Top Note will carry Mr H. Nee's Colours. Nightwatcb raced very green at Manawatu. and was all over th" course. The honours of the-race rested with the winner Rinaldo, who was left ranher badly. Sir Tynox (8.11) is already a strong order for the Waipipi Cup. If tb weather continues as at present t'--tracks should just suit the Sir Laddo horse. Leonta is also likely to '<<■■ well supported in the game event. The unlucky Suratura should not v have any great difficulty in accounting for the weak field opposed irher in the Ruamahunga Handicap affile Masterton meeting. Kaniki. an inmate of Tillcy's stable, may prove her strongest opponent. Th<> I'.etJip—Wailmra gelding Critic is th? latest addition to J. Gravestock's team. Ineuru figures in the April Handicap at the Ma-terton meeting, binnu was a hot order for thi\ ere'st last vein-, but did not start at the meeting. Last year she was lnnd'capped at 8.3, and this year she is asked to carry 6.10. The company, however, is considerably better. Obligant is reported to have broker down badly at Palmerston, and will require a lengthy spell. It is satisfactory to note that thr Masterton Racing Ch:. 1 - ro, inquire into the manner in which the Accident Fimd is administered by the New Zealand Racing Conference. Although no doubt the authorities dispense the fund a,s they tliink right, yet it seems unfair that a large sum of money should be held when there are cases requiring urgent assistance in existence. Tins year's Hawke's Bay Stakes promises to result in a stirring contest. With Bon Reve, Autumnu.s, Rinaldo, Jason and other smart ones engaged, the race should be worth going ■a . long Avay to see. The firstmentioned, showed at PaJ'mer*ston that he :s coming back to form, and may be relied upon to run a great race. He has, however, to tackle a champion in Autumnr.s. Nothing is galloping better at Hastings than the Merriwee mare Yi. A mile and a half may be beyond her distance, but she i,s sure to be in front at one stage of the Hawke's Bay Cup. The death is recorded of the stallion Zimmerman. It appears that the -son of Birkenhead was running in a paddock at his owner's place at Karamu, when he started playing with a piece of willow tree, catching it in his mouth and tossing it, in the i air. This went on for some time, till j at last the piece of tree in descending struck tlie ho>.e below the shoulcer, inflicting a nasty wound, from which he bled to death. Zimmerman was a good perfonrun; on th" turf, and was easily the best horse sired by Birkenhead since he wns imported to the Dominion. Included in his list of successes were the Auckland Cup, Great Northern Derby, A.R.C. Royal Stakes, Canterbury Derby, and C.J.C. Jubilee Cup, now known as the Stead Memorial Cup. Los Angelos has l>een purchased by a Wellington .sportsma-n, and goes into J. H. Prosser' s Porirua stable. Achray, who got on the winning list at Awapuni last week, is a fullbrother to Mr W. D. Watson's First Gan#ul. The Garterton-owned Sarabelle has t gone into retirement until next sea-
