CLOSE SETTLEMENT.
It is satisfactory to note that the Government has decided to acqtiire nine thousand acre-y of land to the east of Masterton for the purposes ofof dose .settlement. This may he' taken as an earnest of the desire of Mr Massey to do something for the. distinct. Still, the land that has been taken (or a large portion of it) is of such an inferior class that it will carry comparatively few settlers. Ln the words of tile Prime Minister.
"we want settlement, more &i»tt!e-m;jni»-ajul still more settlement." Instead of having a population of about SO.OOQ people, the^-Wairarapa and Masterton electorates should accommodate at least 40,000. The taking of 9000 ac3KH c$ inferior country is merely toying with the question or closer settlement, so far as we a.re concerned.
