AN INTERESTING POSITION.
The position that has arisen in Wellington over the .half-holiday question is decidedly interesting. A petition was presented to the City .Council signed by 6570 persons, praying that a poll be taken. A scrutiny of the position has revealed the fact that only 2678 of the names appearing thereon' are valid. This is 84 short of the ten per cent, required under the Act, The Town Clerk has, therefore, decided that lie cannot give instructions for the taking of a poll. In view of what has transpired in Wellington, it would be well if a thorough scrutiny were made of the petitions presented in Masterton and elsewhere. We have no desire to prevent a. poll being taken in this township, for we are sanguine of the result. At the same time, it 'would be a pity that the Borough should be put to the expense of a poll unless the requirements of the Act have been complied with.
